Teacher and technician notes (2.10.2c[1])

It might be worth revising the reaction between potassium bromide and concentrated sulfuric acid which can be found here. The students are usually happy to have produced a clearly new product. I don't try to purify the product (we shall be doing this in the next experiment), but it is worth asking students how they would go about this process.

Materials:

Ethanol [IDA] (5 cm3) Concentrated sulfuric acid (5 cm3)
Potassium bromide (6 g)
10 cm3 measuring cylinder 50 cm3 round-bottomed flask
Funnel Tripod and gauze
Bunsen burner Mortar and pestle
Expansion adapter Powder funnel
Spatula Glass bend
Still head Stopper
Joint clip 100 cm3 conical flask
Laboratory jack or alternative
